The XFL is a professional football league that will resume play in 2020 after debuting- and ceasing operations- in 2001. The XFL aims to fill a lull on the sports calendar from late winter through early spring and appeal to fans of NFL and college football.

Current Line (via 5Dimes): DC -6.5, TOT: 48.5

DC quarterback Cardale Jones, had one of the best performances of the weekend, leading his team to a victory and scoring 30 plus points. RB Jhurell Pressley put up the second-most rushing yards in week 1 with 31 on 12 carries, averaging 2.6 yards per carry. The Defenders had an average of 5.27 yards per play, and 4.84 yards allowed per play on defense. Based on their net yards per play numbers, I have the Defenders ranked as the #4 team in the XFL at +2.1

Best Bets Xfl

Although the Guardians put up a 20 point margin on Tampa, it may have been more of an issue with the Vipers’ coaching and lack of preparation as opposed to the actual execution of the Guardians. That sentiment is reflected in the net yards per play statistic. New York had +5.02 yards per play on offense, but 5.55 yards allowed per play on defense, with that, New York sits with a negative net rating, and are ranked #6 in the league based on my power ratings (-2.6). Guardians QB Matt McGloin was just okay in the performance in week 1, however, I think he is outmatched by Cardale Jones in week 2 vs DC.

Based on my power ratings (via SparkSports.ca), the Defenders are about 7.5 points better than New York on their home field. Give me the Defenders and the under in this one.

XFL Pick: Defenders -6.5 (-110), Under 48 (-110)

Seattle Dragons (0-1) vs. Tampa Bay Vipers (0-1)

Saturday, February 15, 2020 – 05:00 PM EST

Current Line (via 5Dimes): TB -3, TOT: 45

The lack of in-game coaching familiarity from Seattle coach Jim Zorn definitely showed in the later parts of the game vs DC in week 1. QB Brandon Silvers had a decent performance, throwing three touchdown passes, but also threw for two interceptions which were easily the swing moments in the game. For Seattle, the narrative will be whether or not the team can get buts in the seats and eyeballs on the product on Saturday when they host their first home game at Century Link Field.

Tampa Bay comes into week 2 off a disappointing game in week 1 vs New York. The Vipers put up the biggest offensive output in week 1, but came out of the game with only 3 points, losing 23-3. The three-time CFL Grey Cup champion and two time CFL coach of the year Marc Trestman was in poor form in his XFL coaching debut. Testman seemed to be unaware of the XFL rules, his team seem unprepared and his overall game planning was relatively atrocious. The Vipers failed to score any points on five drives inside the 15-yard line against New York.
Tampa may be the better team on paper, but the non-obvious factors all lean towards Seattle. These are two teams that put up just 22 points between the two of them in week 1, but allowed a combined 54. Another average game total between the two teams at 38, but a total sitting at 45. I think we see another low scoring Tampa Bay Vipers’ game. Give me the Dragons and the Under in this one.

XFL Pick: Dragons +3 (-110), Under 45 (-110)

Best

Los Angeles Wildcats (0-1) vs. Dallas Renegades (0-1)

Sunday, February 16, 2020 – 03:00 PM EST

Current Line (via 5Dimes): DAL -4, TOT: 48

The Wildcats dropped their opening game 37-17 to Houston in week 1. While losing the first game of an inaugural season is not going to be labeled as the worst performance in the teams’ history. The problems are already started to arise in the Wildcats organization. Defensive coordinator Pepper Johnson was fired on Monday and linebacker Anthony Johnson was released from his contract despite being hailed as the team’s defensive leader. Starting QB Josh Johnson was unavailable for the game in week 1, and to be frank this team may be an absolute disaster without Johnson behind center. Princeton graduate Charles Kanoff got the start of the Wildcats but was replaced by the relatively unknown Jalan McClendon after a poor outing.
Give me the Wildcats and the under in this one.

XFL Picks: Wildcats +4 (-110), Under 48 (-110)

Houston Roughnecks (1-0) vs. St. Louis BattleHawks (1-0)

Sunday, February 16, 2020 – 06:00 PM EST

Current Line (via 5Dimes): HOU -8, TOT: 50.5

Houston Roughnecks coach June Jones had some offensive success in the CFL. Although his system had no place in NFL football, it worked in the CFL because of defense, and it will work in the XFL because of defense as well. Former Temple QB P.J. Walker had the best QB performance of the weekend, and New York Giants draft pick RB Andre Williams was a go-to threat for the Roughnecks as well.

Ta’Amu is a sneaky fast player who’s speed would be recognized as average in the NFL, but in this league, he stands out for his quickness. I think St. Louis’ head coach and general manager Jonathan Hayes may have the best pedigree coming into the league this year, having spent 15 years as a tight ends coach for the Cincinnati Bengals. The consistent pro-football coaching experience may be all that is needed for this small market XFL team to do some damage this season.

Staying off the side, but give me the under in this one.

The Battlehawks opened the year with the second-worst odds in the XFL, but they were the only road team to win as they toppled the heavily-favored Renegades. Matt Jones led the backfield with 85 yards on 21 attempts, while Christine Michael managed to gain zero yards on seven carries.

2020 XFL Championship Odds: Fallers

Dallas Renegades

The Renegades should get somewhat of a pass for their season-opening loss, as starting QB Landry Jones was ruled out for Week 1. Backup Philip Nelson was efficient (33-for-42) in his place, but he finished with 209 yards and no touchdowns against one INT.

Los Angeles Wildcats

The Wildcats took the biggest fall down the board following their 20-point loss to the Roughnecks. They opened the season with the third-best odds, but are now considered longshots to climb out of a 0-1 hole. WR Nelson Spruce was a bright spot, as he caught 11 of 15 targets for 103 yards.
